First poll has come out for the non-binding DC primary on Jan 13, 04. DC moved its primary to draw attention to its complete lack of representation in Congress.
Results with all candidates:
Dean 27%
Clark 11%
Gephardt 7%
Lieberman 5%
Sharpton 5%
Kerry 4%
Moseley-Braun 4%
Edwards 1%
Kucinich 1%
(Undecided 33%)
Now, five candidates have withdrawn their names from the ballot citing an obscure party rule. Looks like they chickened out if you ask me.
Results with the four candidates:
Dean 45%
Sharpton 11%
Moseley-Braun 8%
Kucinich 4%
(Undecided 33%)
Analysis:
- This does not prove Dean is the favorite of "Washington insiders" because most "Washington insiders" don't actually live in DC! DC residents are some of the most ignored voters in the nation.
- A Dean win in DC coupled with a win in NH/Iowa would give him both a city/urban and rural win very early.
- DC is majority African-American (around 60%) and Dean wins in every ward.
